What is tea tree oil?

Tea tree oil is an essential oil derived from a native Australian plant. The plant is named Melaleuca alternifolia, which is why it’s also sometimes referred to as melaleuca oil.

It’s gained huge popularity internationally over the last few decades thanks to its incredible antifungal, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and antiviral properties. It has a wide range of uses, including treating a number of ailments with great success.

Pros and cons

There are pros and cons to using tea tree oil for killing mold. The advantages are that it’s a safe, organic, and highly effective way of killing mold on porous and non-porous surfaces. It’s also easily available at most stores and pharmacies.

The downside is that it’s not cheap. And as great as it is, there are many other natural remedies for mold removal that are just as effective and costs a lot less. Also, it’s non-toxic unless swallowed, and it can cause skin irritations in susceptible people, so never drink it and wear gloves when handling it.

How to kill mold with tea tree oil

1: Mix one teaspoon of tea tree oil per cup of water and transfer it to an easy to use spray bottle. Add an extra teaspoon if you want it to be stronger, but be sure to shake the spray bottle thoroughly. Also, don’t worry about making too much because you can always store the spray bottle away for later usage as tea tree oil doesn’t easily degrade.

2: Spray the tea tree oil mixture generously onto the moldy area and let it sit overnight.

3: By the next morning, the mold should be dead. Take a rag and dip it into white distilled vinegar and scrub the mold away with it.

Tea tree oil also does a great job of removing mold from clothes. To use it on clothes, simply add two or three teaspoons of it, along with your regular laundry detergent, into your washing machine and wash as usual.
